As Pakame High School celebrates its legacy and growth since its founding in 1980, we had the privilege of connecting with one of its earliest trailblazers, Mai Makonese. A proud member of the first group of students who walked through the school’s doors when it first opened, Shyline’s story is a testament to the vision, resilience, and community spirit that have shaped Pakame into what it is today. In this exclusive interview, Shyline shares her unique experiences, the challenges and triumphs of being part of the school’s founding years, and how her journey has evolved alongside the school.   1. Could you please introduce yourself and share your name and any roles or achievements you’re proud of?

I am Mrs Shyline Makonese (Nee Mangove). I am one of the pioneer students of Pakame secondary school. We opened school in June 1980 and wrote ordinary level in 1983. I am a teacher by profession.

  1. What motivated you to choose Pakame High School in 1980?

Schools were scarce then and being a Methodist, my parents wanted to uphold the principles of Methodism.

3. What were your first impressions of Pakame High School when you arrived in 1980?

I felt like l was in  Harare because l was from an underdeveloped village.

4. Could you describe a typical school day during your time there?

Not one in particular.

5. What were the major subjects or activities you enjoyed the most?

History

6. Were there any memorable teachers or classmates who influenced your life?

Mr Chiponga , ,Ms Machingauta ,Mr Kasirori ,Mr and Mrs Makuyana.

Challenges and Achievements


7. What challenges did you and your peers face as the pioneers of the school?

There was no water and no electricity.

Poor food quality

There was a lot of manuaL work ; cleaning and leveling grounds.

8. How did the pioneer group overcome these challenges?

We just endured.

9. Were there any notable milestones or achievements during your time at Pakame High School?

Building of more hostels and classrooms.

Drilling of the first two boreholes.

I feel great.

Integrity and hardworking.

 They should be hardworkers and uphold good morals.

They should have a hundred percent pass rate in both Advanced level and Ordinary level.
